This small, fast-moving team structures ambiguity, sets strategy, aligns stakeholders, drives operational execution, builds external partnerships, and ensures highly ambitious goals are achieved.
About the Role
Compute is a key lever for OpenAI and AI progress. We need to anticipate compute needs multiple years in advance and make sure we have the right hardware and data centers in place to enable our research cost-effectively and securely.
This Technical Program Manager will work closely with our technical leaders and external partners to map out OpenAI’s compute roadmap, and manage the supply and demand of compute resources for our industry leading AI research and products. You'll manage procurement, capacity planning, and resource optimization, while coordinating cross-functional teams to align on timelines and milestones. You'll become an expert in data centers, hardware supply chains, chip design, security, and large-scale ML training, and play a key role in enabling the compute infrastructure for the next generation of AI.
This role is based in San Francisco, CA. We use a hybrid work model of 3 days in the office per week and offer relocation assistance to new employees.
In this role, you will:
Develop and maintain OpenAI’s compute roadmap, working closely with leadership, technical experts and key external partners
Oversee procurement processes, budgeting, and capacity planning for compute infrastructure
Identify and mitigate risks, and proactively raise critical issues to avoid delays
Track progress versus plans, providing visibility into blockers and milestones across projects
Collaborate with engineering, product, research, and security teams to align compute plans with internal roadmaps
Synthesize recommendations, align with leadership, set ambitious but achievable goals, and own end-to-end execution
Collaborate directly with research, product and leadership on key issues related to infrastructure
Continuously improve OpenAI’s compute strategy as technologies and needs evolve
You might thrive in this role if you have:
8+ years of progressive experience in capacity planning, resource optimization, and infrastructure management
A track record of success in driving long-term technical programs that interface with technical and business stakeholders across multiple organizations or divisions
Experience executing technical programs that require systems and engineering-level knowledge
Strong interpersonal skills that enable you to influence without authority and build support for programs that span many teams
Existing knowledge or are excited to become an expert in data centers, hardware supply chains, chip design, security, and large-scale machine learning
Experience driving operational outcomes under ambitious deadlines
