Job Description

The Center for Black Literature at Medgar Evers College of the City University of New York ( seeks part-time Teaching Artists for its 2025 Re- Envisioning Our Lives Through Literature (ROLL) program. The premise of ROLL is to integrate literature into the English Language Arts curriculum in creative ways that may include drama, poetry, the spoken word, and story. The emphasis of this program is to incorporate African diaspora literature into the classroom. Through reading, studying, and writing about this literature, students build their knowledge base about literature, expand their knowledge of diverse cultures, and improve their critical reading and writing skills. Role of Teaching Artist:
The Teaching Artist (TA) reports to the Director of Operations and Literary Programs. Planning for the program will occur in the fall and implementation of the program will be in the spring. (TA) is responsible for the following activities:
  • Providing students and teachers with specific strategies for enhancing dramatic writing, creative writing, spoken word, and performance skills.
  • Supporting students in compiling creative renditions of literary texts.
  • Collaborating with teachers and the professional development coach in the creation of lesson plans to support the goals of ROLL.
  • Collaborating with teachers and the program coordinator in producing the youth program for the National Black Writers Conference (NBWC).
  • Collaborating with students and teachers in producing the ROLL closing program.
  • Collaborating with teachers and students in creating content for the ROLL Anthology.
  • Providing an evaluation of the workshops and program.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience
  • Experience in working as a teaching artist or creative workshop facilitator
  • Experience working in city public schools, nonprofit settings, or comparable environments is preferred
  • Experience in working with Department of Education teachers and leadership personnel or community-based organizations
  • Commitment to the mission of the Center and of Medgar Evers College, CUNY
  • Minimum of two years of demonstrated experience in teaching workshops in an arts or nonprofit related program is preferred


Availability Requirements:

  • Must be available Monday to Friday for two 45-minute, in-class sessions per week, totaling two days per week for each classroom residency. Additional days may be added if a (TA) is assigned to more than one classroom residency.
  • Willingness to travel to schools in Brooklyn, New York
  • Available and eager to work during the day in-schools
  • Must be available to attend a 4-day professional development workshop in October 2024, prior to the program launch in early February 2025.
  • Mandatory participation in end of program closing event and (NBWC) Youth Day


Program Details & Dates:
This position starts in October 2024 with the ROLL Program launching in early February 2025 and concluding in May 2025. The program culminates in a closing program consisting of a theatrical production featuring student participants and the work they created. This position requires a 16-week commitment (excludes school holidays) for Teaching Artists. (TAs) must be available to attend the National Black Writers Conference (NBWC) Youth Day on March 27th, 2025 and the ROLL Program Closing Program event in May, 2025.

Compensation: Grant-funded residency program. Teaching Artist Rate: $2,400 per classroom residency. The rate includes compensation for in-class sessions, the professional development workshop and program events. (TAs) may be assigned to one additional classroom residency based on experience and availability.
