Job Description

Project Overview: The Munathara Initiative is dedicated to fostering a healthy public sphere, which is vital for producing informed public opinion. We are currently exploring a hypothesis that identifies seven key variables accounting for the health of a public sphere: Shared Arenas, Common Concern, Truth, Civility, Pluralism, Equal Opportunity, and Efficacy. In this pilot project, supported by the European Union, we will collaborate with local researchers in Tunisia and Lebanon to empirically assess these variables within their national public spheres. Our findings will culminate in a comprehensive study.

About the Munathara Initiative: Munathara is an award-winning media action group with offices in the United States, Tunisia, Lebanon, and Morocco. Its mission is to foster healthy, vibrant, and constructive public spheres in the Arab world that harness the full potential of their citizens while holding those in power accountable. Munathara has championed national public conversations across the region - from the historic 2019 Tunisian presidential debates to its weekly political talk programs televised in several countries today. Joining our diverse, multinational team means contributing to a transformative vision that has already influenced the lives of millions since our inception in 2012. The Munathara Initiative is committed to fostering an inclusive environment and welcomes applications from all individuals regardless of gender, orientation, race, religion, or disability, as we celebrate diversity in all its forms.

Role: The Quantitative Research Analyst will be central to translating theoretical frameworks into actionable insights. This role is about developing a new approach to understanding the quality of public discourses, with the potential to influence policy and democratic practices in the Arab region and beyond.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Synthesize the project's theoretical foundations into measurable indicators focusing on the health and vibrancy of public conversations.
  • Design and oversee data collection efforts in Tunisia and Lebanon, ensuring the methodology captures the nuanced dynamics of public conversations in these countries.
  • Help hire, and work closely alongside, scholars in Lebanon and Tunisia who will act as local analysts.
  • Analyze data to identify trends, challenges, and opportunities within the public spheres of these countries, providing a clear narrative that connects empirical findings to theoretical underpinnings.
  • Work alongside a web developer to visualize key findings on the program website (publicspheres.org).
  • Collaborate with project stakeholders, including Munathara’s Project Manager and local researchers, to align findings with the project's strategic objectives and to disseminate insights effectively.
  • Contribute to writing a research study summarizing the pilot’s findings.

Qualifications and skills:

  • Degree in Statistics, Data Science, Social Sciences, or a related field with a strong quantitative focus.
  • Demonstrated experience in quantitative research and data analysis, preferably within media, communication, or public policy domains.
  • Ability to translate complex data sets into actionable insights and coherent narratives.
  • Detail-oriented with the capacity to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Proficiency in statistical software and data visualization tools is desirable but not necessary.

What We Offer:

  • A front-row seat in a project yielding potentially significant lessons for media policy, international development, philanthropy, and future media research.
  • The opportunity to work with a diverse team of experts committed to fostering healthier public conversations for the betterment of our societies.
  • Consulting contract with flexible, remote work arrangements to collaborate with an international team.
  • Compensation commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Next steps: To apply for the position, send an email to jobs@publicspheres.org with your CV, 1-2 paragraphs describing your motivation, and the contact information of two references.
