Description

Position Summary:Supervises the work and actions of sworn and armed police officers, delegates work, and assigns tasks to officers and dispatchers on shift to protect the college community members and property. Enforces existing laws, rules, and regulations and exercises sound judgment and supervision to ensure the equitable enforcement and application of laws and policies by subordinate officers. Assumes incident command in emergency incidents, providing available resources in response. Performs other related duties as assigned, following established practices and procedures. Responsibilities:

Under the direction of a police lieutenant, the Sergeant:
  • Serves as the first-line police supervisor while on duty
  • Supervises police officers and other department employees in the enforcement of local, state, and federal laws and college policies.
  • Reviews police documentation including incident and accident reports and daily logs for accuracy and compliance with criminal, motor vehicle, and traffic laws, NIBRS reporting, and the Clery Act.
  • Receives compliments and complaints from community members about subordinate officers and other civilian employees and refers those to Command Staff for address.
  • Motivates, encourages, and mentors police officers and other department employees to achieve personal success and meet department goals and objectives.
  • Supervises patrol officers in the field, assigns duties, monitors compliance with policies and procedures, and mitigates risk through effective responsible supervision.
  • Refers performance issues or conduct concerns of subordinate officers to the Command Staff.
  • Acts as Incident Commander for major incidents when necessary.
  • Supervises dispatch operations on shift in the absence of the dispatch supervisor.
  • Conducts roll call briefing with officers on shift.
  • Makes notifications as necessary, including notifications necessary per policy to ensure shifts are adequately staffed.
  • Interprets departmental policies and procedures for officers and civilian staff
  • Makes recommendations for commendations to Command Staff
  • Makes recommendations for performance evaluations and in matters concerning employee discipline and retention
  • Supervises field investigations on shift as needed and documentation of crimes and incidents that occur on shift;
  • Ensures college notification procedures are followed for any relevant student-related incidents.
  • Reports hazards as necessary and directs proper notification to appropriate departments to remedy the hazards, i.e. ice on sidewalks, malfunctioning doors, etc.
  • Prepares and communicates shift notices and assignments.
  • Ensures compliance with the Clery Act and Title IX regulations while on shift.
  • Monitors officers on details during the shifts and supports as necessary.
  • Conducts inspections of police personnel and equipment; issues and accounts for police equipment
  • Represents the department at campus and community meetings as requested
  • Will also perform patrol duties, respond to calls for service, make arrests, and testify in court as required
  • May be assigned as supervisor of specialized units or programs, i.e., bicycle patrol, FTO Program, etc.
  • Other duties as assigned
    Minimum Qualifications:
  • The ideal candidate will have demonstrated a detailed and fundamental knowledge of modern police methods, practices and techniques with particular emphasis on the college environment; skills in working as part of a diverse team; ability to motivate others to effectively achieve department goals and objectives; ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with department members, neighboring agencies, and the campus community; possess excellent interpersonal skills and organizational skills; the ability to effectively communicate, orally and in writing to all levels of the organization; knowledge of relevant college-wide police policies and procedures; a strong commitment to diversity, professional ethics and integrity, and understanding of and commitment to community-oriented policing, a self-starting and self-motivated work ethic, and a reliable attendance record.
  • Three (3) years of law enforcement experience
  • Must be immediately eligible for Special State Police Officer certification from the Massachusetts State Police and POST certification
  • Ability to obtain a Massachusetts License to Carry a firearm.
  • Possess a current and valid Massachusetts Class D motor vehicle operator's license and clean driving record.
  • Must understand and demonstrate community policing principles
  • Must exercise sound judgment; maintain calm manner in stressful situations; make decisions and act quickly in emergency/dangerous situations, and maintain confidential information.
  • Ability to follow and provide effective oral and written instructions in a precise, understandable manner.
  • Ability to prepare written reports of investigations, maintain accurate records and analyze data interface professionally with the public.
  • Ability to support students through collaborative efforts and established protocols.
  • Ability to walk alone for long periods of time both indoors and out under varying climate conditions.Physical/Environmental Demands:
  • Physical demands are those in excess for sedentary work; must be able to remain on feet for extended periods, stoop, kneel, crouch, lift, carry, push, pull, climb stairs, balance, walk, and run; must be able to access all facilities on foot; must be able to conduct visual surveillance of individuals and surroundings; must be physically able to operate and communicate using a variety of machines and equipment including baton, automobile, office equipment, radio, telephone, etc; work includes considerable exposure to unusual elements, such as severe weather/ temperatures and loud noises; work environment involves moderate exposure to hazards and physical risks to personal safety.
