JOB DESCRIPTION OF THE DIRECTOR OF MUSIC

AT SAINT MARGARET RC CHURCH - MORRISTOWN

The Director of Music (DM) facilitates the liturgical setting and music for all liturgical celebrations. The responsibilities and qualifications of the position are many: REPORTS TO: Pastor and Parish Manager FLSA STATUS: Exempt

RESPONSIBILITIES

The Director of Music reports to the pastor and parish manager. The Director is an active member of the parish team, responsible for the effective design, facilitation, and implementation of the parish liturgical music program in a manner that promotes "that full, conscious, and active participation," called for by the very nature of liturgical rites in the Roman Catholic tradition. In collaboration with the pastor, staff members, and parishioners, the Director is charged with integrating music ministry into the overall parish mission.

POSITION SUMMARY

  • Works with the pastor to ensure a creative and pastorally responsible integration of music within the liturgy.
  • Plans and coordinates a comprehensive liturgical music program for the parish, ensuring stylistic variety within a unified whole.
  • Form and lead Liturgical Choirs, which includes English Choir (Sundays at 10:30 a.m.), Hispanic Choir (twice a month), Children's Choir (once a month) and the youth choir (once a month).
  • Recruits members for choirs/ensembles thru regular announcements & personal contacts.
  • Provides musical leadership at Sunday liturgies, and special liturgies, including special services designated by the pastor (e.g., Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter Vigil).
  • Provides trained and prepared cantor(s) and accompanist(s) for all other Sunday and special liturgies where no choir is present.
  • Recruits, oversees training, supervises and makes the schedule for Hispanic Choirs (seven Hispanic music ministries).
  • Provides ongoing training and formation for each choir/ensemble through regular rehearsals and meetings.
  • Schedules and regularly directs rehearsals with individual musicians, cantors, and ensembles.
  • Takes primary responsibility for the selection of music for all parish liturgies.
  • Helps develop skills in congregational singing among the members of Parish.
  • Coordinates the purchase, maintenance, and distribution of liturgical music resources and instruments for parish.
  • Coordinates music for weddings and funerals.
  • Evaluates, encourages, and shows appreciation to musicians of the parish.
  • Serves as a resource person and works with staff members in preparing for special liturgies for sacramental programs (e.g., First Communion, Reconciliation, Confirmation) and R.C.I.A.
  • Creates a long-range plan for the development of music and music ministry in the parish.
  • Attends meetings relevant to the position, including weekly staff meetings with the pastor, Pastoral meetings, etc.
  • Assuming the role of leading musician (accompanist or choral director); making creative choices of music and their judicious placement for liturgical celebrations; recruiting and scheduling various music ministries (e.g., choirs, cantors, instrumentalists).
  • Expected to adhere to office hours previously coordinated with the pastor.
  • Prepare music sheets for violinists using software to transcribe music (they usually play with the Hispanic Choir and the Youth Choir).
  • Prepare music with chords and lyrics for Hispanic musicians.
DM as Person of Faith. As a pastoral minister, the Director of Music has the responsibility to nurture his or her own faith in order to nurture the faith of others.

QUALIFICATIONS

  1. A baptized Christian willing to enter into the faith life of the community he/she serves & leads.
  2. Preferred applicants who are bilingual (English/Spanish) and have parish experience.
  3. Prudent balance of enthusiasm and patience, and an ability to work in collaboration with others.
4. Formation: At least a Bachelor's, preferably a Master's degree in music or its equivalent. 5. Musical leadership requires skills in the following areas: keyboard, voice and conducting, as well as contemporary instrumental ensembles, orchestration, handbells, children's choirs, composition and familiarity with musical styles of various cultures of the community. 6. A thorough understanding of Roman Catholic liturgical theology and praxis. 7. Knowledge of the history and repertoire of sacred music. 8. A willingness to keep informed of liturgical pastoral developments and to participate in continuing education to maintain and further musical expertise. 9. The Director of Music should demonstrate the ability to: Lead and animate the community in sung prayer; skilled at interpersonal relationships with experience and knowledge to deal with negative situations effectively; the ability to work as a team player and to encourage team building whenever possible with staff and designated team leaders and with diocesan officials. Ability to plan, coordinate, and communicate with those involved in parish programs Possess extensive knowledge of Church documents with regard to the liturgy Understand and implement parish and diocesan guidelines concerning safe environment and strict adherence to the parish safe environment program 10. Active member of the Roman Catholic Church.

WORK SCHEDULE

The Director of Music normally is not expected to be present for all parish liturgies or work an indeterminate number of hours. However, he/she is expected to cover key services and work a 40 hour week as follows: 10 hours of Accompanying liturgies 12 hours rehearsal of music ministers 4 hours preparation, outlining content of worship, and other musical/organizational tasks 4 hours Liturgy preparation, music selection, researching new music, and advance seasonal planning and assisting parish personnel in liturgical and musical matters. 4 hours Personal instrumental practice 6 hours Other administrative tasks, meetings, copyright procedures, etc. 40 hours Total
