Ideal candidates will have a demonstrated record of excellence in teaching and service within communication studies. We are eager to work with someone who possesses a dynamic and engaging teaching style to model excellence in public speaking to students, as well as explore innovative ideas and approaches to teaching public speaking. The successful candidate will be able to provide quality instruction in Public Speaking and other oral communication courses. Appointments to the faculty of The University of Alabama are based on the personnel requirements of the University’s academic programs and on the goal of achieving and maintaining excellence in its teaching, research, and service/academic citizenship activities.

Responsibilities:

- Assist with programmatic duties in the Public Speaking Program related to developing Graduate Teaching Assistants and mentoring lab instructors.
- Assist in executing specific courses designed to enhance outreach of oral communication skills across campus.

The Public Speaking Program at the University of Alabama supports two campus wide programs which seek to develop quality oral communication skills in all students, faculty, and staff. COM 123: Public Speaking is a three-hour course offered by the Communication Studies Department and is open to all university students. It is designed to offer the theory and practice of basic principles of public speaking, with an emphasis on the compositional and presentational aspects of communication in formal speaking situations. It counts as a Humanities course in the General Education Core Curriculum and fulfills specific course requirements for many majors throughout the university. The course regularly supports more than 1400 students a semester between lectures, labs, distance learning, and stand-alone sections. The program is supported through the effort of 9-12 graduate teaching assistants who serve as lab instructors for the program. The program was recognized by the National Communication Association (NCA) as a program of distinction.

The Public Speaking Program also supports The Speaking Studio, our campus-wide communication center designed to help students, faculty, and community partners improve their presentation and public speaking skills. UA undergraduate students serve as consultants and help support the growth and development of hundreds of clients in their development as communicators.
