Duties and Responsibilities
- Works under the direction of the Chair and in coordination with the Undergraduate Chair to provide student support services and program support services to the Department of Second Language Studies (SLS).
- Serves as the primary advisor for undergraduate students majoring in SLS and the BA + MA accelerated pathway in SLS.
- Guides students as they plan their courses of study; supports students in gaining work/research experience.
- Provides program information and serves as a recruiter for prospective SLS majors, including meets with prospective students and responds to visitors requesting information about the BA program.
- Provides guidance and information to students, faculty and others who wish to conduct research in the SLS undergraduate program.
- Serves as a liaison with the College of Arts, Languages & Letters Advising Center.
- Trains other SLS BA advisors and keeps them updated about University policy changes
- Oversees the maintenance of student records and program data, including databases concerning the department's undergraduate programs for enrollments, student performance, student progress, further study or employment after graduation, etc.
- Provides new student orientation sessions.
- Contributes to improving the department, its services and expertise; recommend changes to make the department more effective/efficient and responsive to students' needs.
- Manages ongoing projects, and program reports; maintains documentation on program policies and procedures.
- Acts as the liaison between SLS and other University of Hawaii (UHM) administrative units for enrollment monitoring and student tracking.
- Serves as coordinator for SLS courses meeting General Education focus requirements.
- Assists Chair and Undergraduate Chair with BA course scheduling.
- Coordinates with the SLS Assessment Committee regarding program evaluation projects, program review, evaluation and assessment reports, and other forms of assessment or evaluation, as needed.
- Oversees design and maintenance of undergraduate program brochure, website and other publicity materials; liaises with UHM units regarding development, maintenance, and dissemination of program-related websites.
- Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
- Possession of a baccalaureate degree in Second Language Studies, Liberal Arts, or other related fields and 3 year(s) of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for academic advising and/or program management; or equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.
- Considerable working knowledge of principles, practices and techniques in the area of academic advising and/or program management as demonstrated by the broad knowledge of the full range of pertinent standard and evolving concepts, principles and methodologies.
- Considerable working knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state laws, rules, regulations and theories and systems associated with student academic services and/or program management.
- Demonstrated ability to resolve wide ranging complex problems through the use of creative reasoning and logic to accurately determine the cause of the problems and the resolution of the problems in an effective, innovative and timely manner.
- Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials.
- Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals.
- Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer, apply word processing software, and produce high-quality written work.
- For supervisory work, demonstrated ability to lead subordinates, manage work priorities and projects, and manage employee relations.
- Demonstrated ability to work with and communicate effectively and sensitively with students and colleagues from diverse backgrounds.
- Demonstrated ability to work with individuals with diverse demographic populations and cultures.
- Demonstrated ability to manage and organize data that facilitates tracking, analysis, and sharing.
- Possesses strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends at on and off-campus events.
Desirable Qualifications
- Has discipline-specific and professional knowledge of the relevant academic fields.
- Knowledge of administrative and managerial office practices and procedures.
- Computer software and web-design skills, and some hardware troubleshooting capabilities.
- MA in a relevant field
- Five years of experience in academic advising and/or program management duties in a relevant program.
- Experience in academic advising in a higher education setting.
- Experience working in STAR and Banner or equivalent systems.
- Familiarity with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and Title IX.
- Familiarity with second language learning and teaching and intercultural experiences.
