As a Catholic and Vincentian university, St. John's is committed to institutionalizing practices of inclusive excellence to ensure that we welcome and celebrate the intrinsic worth of all members of our community. We will become an even stronger university as we enhance equity at every level of our institution. As noted in our Vision Statement, our graduates will excel in the competencies and values required for leadership and service in a rapidly evolving world.

Division/Department Information

The Department of Art and Design at St. John's University invites applications for adjunct opportunities in Art History, to begin September 2024. The Department is located on the Queens campus in New York City. We offer in-person and fully online courses. The mission of the Department, since the first degree program was offered in 1963, is to provide a rich and challenging educational environment that emphasizes the creation of visually sophisticated works and concurrently develops the whole person: intellectually, ethically, and critically. Our Majors include a BA in Art History, BFA degrees in Graphic Design, Illustration, Photography, and Fine Art, and an MA in Museum Administration. Students in the 120-credit NASAD accredited Art History BA program complete a rigorous program of global art coursework and a capstone research project. Art History courses support the Art History Major and Minor, required foundations for the BFA Majors, as well as College Core and general elective courses.

Responsibilities

The Department of Art and Design at St. John's University in Queens, NY, is seeking adjunct faculty to teach a variety of courses. For Fall 2024, we seek to fill two sections of ART 2140 'Power and Persuasion in Art' and one section of ART 3100 'Women in the Arts.' Sections are capped at 25 students. Both courses will be offered fully online asynchronous. Prior to the start of the semester, all new instructors, even with substantial online teaching experience at other institutions, will be required to complete an online training course about Distance Learning practices at St. John's University.

ART 2140 'Power and Persuasion in Art' presents an analysis of economic change and cultural patterns of wealth and poverty through the lens of art and architecture. This course also counts as a Social Justice Core requirement for students of any Major.

ART 3100 'Women in the Arts' is a survey of art history through the lens of gender studies, introducing students to an expanded canon of art history and to critical, theoretical, and historical writing on women in the arts.

In addition, for future semesters, we are interested in adjuncts with the potential to teach 'African Art,' 'Latin American Art,' and/or 'Art of the Pre-Colonial Americas.' These courses could be offered in person on our Queens campus or online asynchronously. There could also be potential for adjunct faculty to offer 'Special Topics in Art History' courses on subjects of their expertise that complement with our curriculum.

Departmental syllabi and bibliography for all courses would be available to a hired instructor. The instructor can adapt a Departmental course syllabus if it maintains the established course description, goals, and outcomes, and it covers the established, suggested Units of Instruction.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have Art History and online asynchronous teaching experience. Candidates should have an MA or PhD in Art History or a closely associated discipline. We hope successful candidates would be available to support the Department for multiple semesters and be prepared to teach multiple courses.

Application Process

Submit a letter of application; curriculum vitae; and a teaching statement and/or sample syllabi. A list of three references will be required of finalists.

St. John's University is an Equal Opportunity Employer and encourages applications from women and minorities. All qualified applicants will receive consideration without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national or ethnic origin, age, status as an individual with a disability, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law. I understand that any offer of employment is subject to receipt by St. John's University of satisfactory references, verification of employment and education.

In compliance with NYC's Pay Transparency Act, the hire-on rate is $950 per credit for candidates without Ph.D. and $1050 per credit for candidates with a Ph.D. . St. John's University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
